Ruckus over Namaz in Gujarat University, fight with foreign students offering Namaz in hostel

Ahmedabad : A group of people in Ahmedabad allegedly assaulted students from different countries for offering namaz in a Gujarat University hostel building, leaving two of them hospitalised.

Police said on Sunday that one student each from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan has been admitted to the hospital after the incident that took place on Saturday night. Police Commissioner G.S. Malik said that an FIR has been registered against 20 to 25 people and nine teams of security personnel have been formed to investigate the incident.

Malik said that the incident was reported around 10.50 pm on Saturday night when about 20-25 people entered the hostel of Gujarat University and objected to the students from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and other countries offering Namaz in the hostel.

He said that about 300 international students including students from Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Sri Lanka and African countries are registered in Gujarat University. Around 75 international students live in the university’s A-Block hostel where the incident took place.

Malik said, “Around 20-25 people entered the hostel premises and expressed their objection to international students offering namaz there and asked them to offer namaz in the mosque.

They had an argument over the issue and they beat him up and pelted stones,” he said, adding that the police took action within minutes of the control room receiving information at 10:51 pm.

A police van reached the spot and action was taken. He said that two students have been admitted to the hospital who are from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan.

Malik said that an FIR has been registered against 20-25 people and they will be arrested soon. He told that the situation is under control. He said that the case will be monitored by the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).
