Amritsar, June 16: In a statement that has sparked widespread outrage and deepened communal tensions, Giani Malkit Singh, the Head Granthi of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, publicly defended Nihang Amritpal Singh Mehron, the prime accused in the brutal murder of Social Media influencer Kamal Kaur Bhabi.
While speaking to the media, Giani Malkit Singh said, “Mehron did what was right. Whoever tries to defame Sikhs should face the same consequences. He has done nothing wrong.” The top religious figure further condemned what he described as a growing trend of vulgar content on social media and accused certain individuals of “deliberately changing their religious identity” to malign the sikh faith.
Referring to the teachings of Sikh Gurus, he said,“Our Guru Sahibans have taught us to stay away from filth and obscenity. It is not just Sikh youth, but youth from all communities — Hindu, Muslim, everyone — who must avoid such content. But those who insult our faith deserve what happened. This is not new — such actions have precedent.”
The statement has drawn sharp criticism from civil society groups, human rights activists, and members of various religious communities. No official comment has been made by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Giani Malkit Singh’s remarks so far.
The remarks come in the aftermath of the murder of Kamal Kaur Bhabhi, a controversial online personality, by Mehron and his aides. The Bathinda police have confirmed that Mehron has fled to the UAE, and efforts are underway to bring him back.
