Srinagar freezes at minus 6.2 degrees Celsius, season's lowest so far

Srinagar: Srinagar has reached a temperature of minus 6.2 degrees Celsius, marking the lowest point of the season so far, as reported on December 20. According to the MET Department, other areas also recorded significant lows: Gulmarg at minus 6 degrees and Pahalgam at minus 8.2 degrees. Jammu city saw a minimum of 6.9 degrees, Katra at 6 degrees, Batote at 1 degree, Banihal at minus 3.8, and Bhaderwah at minus 1.6 degrees.

The MET office predicts light snow in higher regions between December 21 and 22, while colder and drier weather is expected to persist in Jammu and Kashmir until December 28. The chilly conditions have made it difficult for residents to leave their homes, with slippery roads causing delays in morning commutes. As a result, many waited for the temperature to rise before venturing out.

Additionally, water taps frequently froze overnight, leading locals to light small fires around the pipes to thaw them. The period known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ which lasts for 40 days of severe winter weather, begins tomorrow and runs until January 30. During this time, the maximum temperatures typically drop, contributing to the cold. Water bodies in the region, including lakes and rivers, often start freezing as Chillai Kalan commences, and the skies tend to remain overcast, limiting views of clear skies.

During the winter months, it’s common to see locals in the traditional loose tweed garment called the ‘Pheran,’ which has been adapted for office wear with various designs based on the wearer’s economic status. To stay warm, many carry a ‘Kangri,’ a wicker basket filled with embers that can be placed under the Pheran for heat.
