Damascus: The Syrian Opposition announced that rebel fighters have entered the capital city of Damascus early Sunday, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitoring organization based in Britain.
Reportedly, hundreds of government soldiers have been ordered to withdraw from Damascus International Airport, with some seen changing out of their military uniforms into civilian clothes, as noted by the monitor.
Several media sources have indicated that Syrian President Bashar Assad has left the country, a claim made by the rebel forces. However, the Syrian presidency stated on Saturday that Assad continues to fulfill his constitutional duties in the capital.
Xinhua reporters present in Damascus reported hearing heavy gunfire throughout the streets, coupled with heavy traffic as people fled the capital.
Following the rebels’ claim, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi Jalali addressed citizens on Facebook, expressing willingness to cooperate with any leadership chosen by the people and urging them not to vandalize public facilities.
