Hyderabad: Telangana’s government has declared Telugu a mandatory subject for students in Classes 1 to 10 across all boards, including CBSE, ICSE, and IB, starting from the 2025-26 academic year. This decision stems from the Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act, which aimed to enforce this rule since March 30, 2018. However, it was not fully executed under the previous administration.
Recently, the new government took steps to ensure compliance with the Act, conducting discussions with the managements of various school boards. From the upcoming academic year, Telugu will be required for 9th and 10th graders in these boards, with the Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy choosing to implement a simplified Telugu textbook, ‘Vennela,’ for assessments. This adjustment aims to assist students whose first language isn’t Telugu, as well as those from other regions.
A Government Order has been released to replace the standard Telugu subject ‘Singidi’ with ‘Vennela’ for Class 9 from 2025-26 and for Class 10 from 2026-27, following a proposal from the Director of School Education, which has been approved by the government. Secretary of School Education, Yogita Rana, initiated these orders on Tuesday.
