Tomato Prices Fall by 22.5% Amid Increased Fresh Crop Supply

New Delhi: Retail tomato prices are decreasing as the influx of fresh produce accelerates in wholesale markets. As of November 14, the all-India average retail price of tomatoes dropped to Rs 52.35 per kg, marking a 22.4% decline from Rs 67.50 per kg on October 14, according to a statement from the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

In the same timeframe, the average prices at Azadpur mandi nearly halved from Rs 5,883 per quintal to Rs 2,969 per quintal due to the increased arrivals of tomatoes. Similar price reductions have been observed in major markets like Pimpalgaon, Madanapalle, and Kolar.

The Department of Agriculture’s third advance estimate indicates that the total annual tomato production for 2023-24 is projected at 213.20 lakh tonnes, a 4% increase from 204.25 lakh tonnes in 2022-23.

While tomatoes are grown year-round, production is seasonal, influenced by adverse weather and logistical disruptions, which significantly affect prices due to the fruit’s perishability. The price surge in October was attributed to prolonged heavy rains in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, the statement noted.

The seasonal trends reveal that October and November are prime sowing periods in key producing states. However, the continuity of tomato availability in the market is supported by the crop’s short cultivation cycle and multiple harvests.

Although arrivals have decreased in major tomato markets like Madanapalle and Kolar, prices have declined due to seasonal contributions from regions in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, which have helped balance the supply nationwide. Current weather conditions are also favorable for tomato crops and have facilitated a smooth supply chain from farms to consumers, the statement added.
