Hyderabad: Transgender individuals are set to be appointed as traffic volunteers in Hyderabad to help manage traffic and conduct drunk driving checks. The initiative, proposed by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, aims to address the city’s escalating traffic issues.
In the first phase, these volunteers will be stationed at busy intersections throughout Greater Hyderabad to deter traffic violations, such as signal jumping. Additionally, they will assist in drunk driving checkpoints, responding to a rise in such incidents in the region.
The Chief Minister has directed officials to treat these volunteers similarly to Home Guards, suggesting a specialized uniform and salaries equivalent to that of Home Guards. Implementation of this initiative is expected to be trialed soon.
This decision was made in September, with plans to collect information from transgenders interested in volunteering for traffic management. They will receive training for one to two weeks prior to deployment.
Officials believe that this program will not only provide financial opportunities for transgender individuals but also help them gain respect within the community. This move comes in response to the increasing congestion caused by a growing number of vehicles, building on a previous initiative by Cyberabad Police to improve traffic flow in the IT sector.
