Vietnam urges public vigilance amid mild rise in Covid-19 cases

Hanoi: The Vietnamese Ministry of Health has called on citizens to stay alert and continue following Covid-19 safety measures as cases are rising in several countries worldwide.

The advisory emphasizes precautions such as wearing masks in public places and avoiding large gatherings, in light of a slight rise in domestic infections and growing global concerns over new subvariants, especially in neighboring nations like Thailand, reported Vietnam News Agency.

Since the start of 2025, Vietnam has reported a total of 148 sporadic Covid-19 cases across 27 provinces and cities, with no deaths thus far. Although there have been no significant outbreaks, the health authorities have observed a slow increase in weekly cases over the past three weeks, averaging around 20 new infections per week.

Officials have warned that new cases could surge in the upcoming weeks, particularly following recent holidays marked by increased travel and social activities, according to Xinhua news agency. However, they do not expect a substantial rise in serious cases.

The World Health Organization states that Covid-19 is caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Most infected individuals experience mild to moderate respiratory symptoms and recover without needing intensive treatment. Nonetheless, older adults and those with underlying health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, respiratory illnesses, or cancer are at higher risk of severe illness. Anyone at any age can experience serious illness or death from Covid-19.

To curb transmission, it’s vital to stay informed about the disease and how it spreads. Protective measures include maintaining at least one meter distance from others, wearing well-fitted masks, frequently washing hands or using alcohol-based sanitizers, getting vaccinated when eligible, and adhering to local health guidelines.

The virus primarily spreads through small liquid particles released from an infected person’s mouth or nose during coughing, sneezing, speaking, singing, or breathing. These particles include larger droplets and smaller aerosols. Practicing respiratory etiquette, such as coughing into a flexed elbow, and staying home to self-isolate if unwell, are crucial steps to prevent further spread.
