The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) secured a respectable victory in the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election in Punjab. This was considered the semi-final for the 2027 Assembly elections. Because the AAP won the Tarn Taran seat convincingly, its workers believe they will win the Assembly elections. Now, the AAP has announced plans to test its strength in Punjab’s vast rural communities.
The party believes that if the AAP wins in the rural areas, it will be impossible for the opposition to block its path to a second term after 2027. The Bhagwant Mann government has announced that the District Council and Panchayat Samiti elections in Punjab will be held on December 14. The election code of conduct has been implemented. The nomination process will begin on December 1, with videography. December 4 will be the last day for nominations.
Nomination papers will be scrutinised on December 5. Nominations can be withdrawn until December 6. Voting will take place on December 14th from 8 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes will take place on December 17th. For these elections, 19,181 polling booths will be set up across the state. Voting will be done using ballot papers, not EVM machines, as the Election Commission has determined it is difficult to meet the demand for so many machines. 3,528 sensitive booths have now been declared.
There are 915 hyper-sensitive booths. The nomination fee for the Zila Parishad is ₹400, but Dalit candidates can pay ₹200. For the Panchayat Samiti, nominations will start at ₹200, while Dalit candidates will have to pay ₹100. A question arises in political circles as to whether the Aam Aadmi Party will easily win the Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections, as the Akali Dal also finished second in the Tarn Taran seat.
Election analysts have long believed that Tarn Taran is primarily a Sikh-dominated constituency, with both radical and moderate Sikh organisations having a strong presence there. The Aam Aadmi Party candidate won this seat with relative ease, a true achievement for the party. It would be premature to base your predictions on this victory for the 2027 election results, as the Akali Dal also improved its position in the Tarn Taran by-election. Opposition parties will undoubtedly make every effort to strengthen themselves until the election date approaches.
