The AAP government in Punjab presented its fifth and final budget of its first term on Sunday. People were expecting a grand feast in anticipation of the upcoming assembly elections next year, and the government would try to win over voters with indiscriminate concessions. However, this budget is a highly controlled one, presented with a well-planned strategy.
No attempt was made to introduce new guarantees. Budgetary provisions have been carefully crafted in this election year to build Punjab’s capital infrastructure and free it from the economic cycle of deficits and debt. Presenting the budget, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema presented a comparative analysis of Punjab’s performance, citing data from every sector—education, health, and sports—with comparisons with previous governments. He also stated that revenue has been increased through frugality and fiscal discipline, and that the fortunes of Punjab’s treasury can be transformed. While the budget certainly didn’t unleash a plethora of grand gifts, the government demonstrated mature political leadership. The government also fulfilled its promise of giving Rs1,000 to women in the state, as part of its 2022 election agenda. Budget 2026 aims to promote the education system, rural development, and sports.
This will accelerate the state’s inclusive growth. Balanced budgets have been increased for various schemes, for example, the education sector and rural development. This demonstrates to critics of the budget that our government doesn’t just make empty promises but actually delivers. It has done so in the past and will continue to do so in the future. This budget is rooted in its mission objectives: the “Rangla Punjab Scheme,” the “War Against Drugs,” and “Khedda Punjab, Badalda Punjab.” This Aam Aadmi Party government believes it has fulfilled its biggest promise by announcing monthly contributions to women under the “Maanwa Dhiyaan Satkar Yojana.”
By increasing the budget for the Rangla Punjab and other schemes, it has attempted to maintain an atmosphere of prosperity in the state. This budget calls for further strengthening the “Rising Punjab” and “Sarkar Tuhade Dwar” schemes. A policy has been implemented to facilitate entrepreneurs in starting new ventures. Thus, it has promised the people of Punjab that it will achieve a 10% GDP growth. By making meaningful increases in budget expenditure and avoiding unnecessary expenditures, the Punjab government has demonstrated prudence.
