Chandigarh: The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab has suffered a major political setback. Amritsar North MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh resigned from the party on Monday. He also sent his resignation to the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly. He is the third MLA to leave the party in the last two days. Earlier on Sunday, two other MLAs had also resigned from the AAP’s primary membership and the Assembly.
Former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh was suspended from the AAP for five years in June 2025 for alleged anti-party activities. He had protested the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in the disproportionate assets case.
Expressed gratitude to the people of Punjab
Sharing information about his resignation on the social media platform X, Singh expressed gratitude to the people of Punjab. He wrote that he will remain indebted to the people for the love and respect they have bestowed upon him.
He stated that with the people’s support and God’s blessings, everyone must rise above street politics and ribbon-cutting politics. His goal is to restore Punjab, which is plagued by drug addiction, extortion, gangsterism, and corruption, to a progressive and desirable state.
Singh claimed that he has achieved 90 percent of his goals. Citing his greatest achievement, he said that he strived to eliminate the “mother-father” culture in politics and to work with the public as his source of inspiration.
Local Issues of Amritsar Raised in the Assembly
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh said that he has always raised the voice of the people of Amritsar in the Punjab Assembly. He prominently raised issues ranging from water and sewerage to the Circuit House, Company Bagh, dirty drains, Guru Nanak Dev University, Government Medical College, Sarup Rani College, and the Bargari sacrilege case.
He said that for the first time, he raised specific issues related to his area in the Assembly, naming streets and neighborhoods. Singh further stated that his efforts would be to ensure clean politics and transparent administration. His sole objective would be “Punjab First,” and that he would have no personal interests beyond that.
Earlier on Sunday, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh had targeted AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He alleged that the party had deviated from its core principles.
Two other MLAs also left the party on Sunday
Before Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, MLAs Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jodmajra also resigned from the AAP’s primary membership and the Assembly on Sunday.
Pathanmajra, who represents the Sanaur assembly seat in Patiala district, sent his resignation to Arvind Kejriwal and announced his departure from the party with immediate effect. He has previously been embroiled in several controversies. A rape case was filed against him, after which he fled to Australia. He was arrested by the police after returning to India and joining the investigation into the case.
Meanwhile, Chetan Singh Joudmajra, MLA from the Samana Assembly constituency and a former minister in the Punjab government, announced his resignation through a social media post. According to media reports, tensions between Joudmajra and the party leadership had escalated after former senior Akali Dal leader Surjit Singh Rakhra was appointed in-charge of the Samana Assembly constituency.
It is reported that Joudmajra was upset with the decision to appoint another leader in-charge of his own constituency. This was seen as a blow to his political influence and position in the region.
Challenges for AAP ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections
The resignations of three consecutive MLAs come at a time when preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections are underway in Punjab. These resignations appear to pose a political challenge to the ruling AAP in the state.
