Kolkata: An office of the Mamata All India Trinamool Congress (MAITC) in south Kolkata’s Jadavpur area was allegedly vandalised by unidentified miscreants on Sunday night, prompting the Kolkata Police to launch an investigation.
The office, located at Vidyasagar Colony No. 4, was allegedly targeted a day after the party office and residence of former Trinamool Congress MLA Debabrata Majumdar were attacked in the area.
Party Office Furniture, Flag Allegedly Damaged
According to Mamata Trinamool workers, when they reached the office following the incident, they found the door broken and furniture and other items damaged. A sofa set was allegedly overturned, while the party flag bearing a pair of flowers was torn and scattered.
Workers also claimed that a water jug was broken and that an attempt had been made to search and vandalise a cupboard inside the office.
Mamata faction leaders alleged that the attackers were acting under the protection of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and accused the party of being behind the incident. The BJP has denied the allegation and claimed that the vandalism was linked to an internal factional dispute within the Trinamool.
Video footage released by the Mamata faction did not clearly establish the identity of the attackers or show the flag of any political party.
Police Examine CCTV Footage
A complaint was emailed to the Netaji Nagar police station following the incident. Police have started an investigation and are examining CCTV footage to identify those involved. No arrests have been reported so far.
The latest incident comes amid a series of alleged attacks and vandalism in the Jadavpur area. On Saturday night, unidentified miscreants were accused of vandalising several Communist Party of India (Marxist) offices and attacking the residence and party office of former Trinamool Congress MLA Debabrata Majumdar.
Police said on Sunday that a group of motorcycle-borne miscreants had rampaged through party offices in several wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Party flags were allegedly pulled down and thrown onto the ground.
The identity and political affiliation of those involved in the earlier incidents remain unclear. Police are investigating whether the latest vandalism is connected to the earlier attacks, while rival political groups have traded allegations over the incidents.
