Market Update: Sensex-Nifty Open in Green; Rupee Weakens Against US Dollar

The Indian market opened in the green on Monday. In early trade, the 30-share Sensex rose by 546.64 points to reach 77,210.85. Meanwhile, the 50-share Nifty climbed 169.55 points to stand at 24,067.50. Driven by persistent demand for the dollar and a broader shift toward safe-haven investment options, the rupee depreciated by 11 paise against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, falling to 94.27.

Performance of Sensex and Nifty Companies
Among the 30 Sensex companies, shares of Sun Pharma surged by over 4 percent after the company announced that it would acquire the US-based firm Organon & Co. in an all-cash deal valued at an enterprise valuation of US$ 11.75 billion. Adani Ports, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Tata Steel, and Mahindra & Mahindra were also among the top gainers. Among the blue-chip stocks, Axis Bank, Bharat Electronics, Bajaj Finance, and Reliance Industries lagged behind.

Mixed Trends in Asian Markets
Asian stock markets witnessed mixed trends; notably, Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index hit a new record high on Monday, following US stocks reaching fresh highs at the end of the previous week.

Oil prices rose by over US$ 1 as negotiations to end the conflict with Iran encountered further hurdles. The White House cancelled plans to send an envoy to Pakistan for further talks, with US President Donald Trump citing a lack of progress.

This week, key decisions regarding interest rates are expected from major central banks, including the Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Japan, and the Bank of England. In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index rose by 1.4 percent to reach 60,564.18, marking a new intraday high. In South Korea, the Kospi index rose 2.1 percent to reach 6,617.94.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 0.1 percent to 25,951.86, while the Shanghai Composite index rose 0.2 percent to reach 4,089.04. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index dropped 0.3 percent to 8,759.40. Taiwan’s Taiex surged 2.6 percent, driven by a resurgence in buying of technology stocks amid a boom in artificial intelligence.
Brent crude prices rose to $106.55 per barrel.

The global oil benchmark, Brent crude, was trading at $106.55 per barrel in futures trading, up 1.16 percent. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) have remained consistent sellers; on Friday, they sold equities worth ₹8,827.87 crore. Meanwhile, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) invested ₹4,700.71 crore in equities.
