Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asserted that Kerala is “ready for change,” intensifying his attack on both the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Addressing a public rally in Palakkad, Modi said that the people of Kerala are looking beyond the traditional political dominance of the two alliances and are seeking a new direction for development and governance.
Sharp attack on LDF and UDF
During his speech, Modi criticised both the LDF and UDF, accusing them of failing to deliver on promises and hindering the state’s growth. He alleged that both alliances have alternated in power for decades but have not brought the desired transformation in Kerala.
The Prime Minister claimed that voters are now disillusioned with what he described as “old politics” and are ready to embrace a new political alternative led by the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Campaign push ahead of Assembly elections
Modi’s remarks come as part of an aggressive campaign by the BJP-led NDA in Kerala, where elections are scheduled to be held on April 9, 2026.
His visit to Palakkad and other parts of the state marks a key effort by the BJP to expand its presence in a region traditionally dominated by regional alliances.
The Prime Minister’s speech focused on energising party workers and reaching out to undecided voters.
‘Message of change’ from the people
Modi stated that the people of Kerala are already sending a “message of change,” indicating a shift in political sentiment. He pointed to recent electoral trends and growing support for the BJP as signs that the political landscape in the state is evolving.
He urged voters to give the NDA an opportunity to govern the state, promising development, better governance, and new opportunities for youth.
BJP’s vision for Kerala
Highlighting the BJP’s vision, Modi spoke about transforming Kerala into a developed state with a focus on infrastructure, tourism, technology, and employment generation.
He emphasized that the NDA aims to bring “double-engine government” benefits coordination between the Centre and the state to accelerate development projects and improve governance.
The Prime Minister also appealed to first-time voters and young people, urging them to support a new political direction for Kerala.
Political battle intensifies
Kerala’s political landscape has long been dominated by the LDF and UDF, which have alternated in power for decades. The BJP has been trying to make inroads but has so far had limited electoral success in Assembly elections.
However, recent political developments and campaign efforts suggest a more competitive contest in 2026. Analysts believe that the BJP’s narrative of “change” is aimed at breaking the bipolar political structure of the state.
