Khalistan-supporting MP Amritpal Singh, representing Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib constituency, will contest the 2027 Assembly elections. This was confirmed by ‘Waris Punjab De’ leader and MLA Manpreet Ayali. He stated that since the public elected Amritpal as an MP even while he was in jail—despite him not actively seeking the role—the people would extend their support in the Assembly elections as well.
He added that the specific constituency from which Amritpal will contest has not yet been decided. Ayali mentioned that people wish to see Amritpal as the Chief Minister of Punjab, and the party has already declared him its CM candidate. It is worth noting that MP Amritpal is currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail.
Since winning the parliamentary election, he has not been able to attend the Lok Sabha even once; he was brought in under tight security solely to take his oath. He is being held in the Assam jail because the Punjab government invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against him. Leaders from his party state that if Amritpal is not released, he will contest the election from within the prison. Amritpal had also contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election from jail, securing a victory with the highest margin of votes in Punjab.
