Mumbai, Maharashtra: A 33-year-old professor at a private college in Mumbai was fatally stabbed during an altercation on a local train at Malad railway station on Saturday evening. The accused has been arrested under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), police confirmed on Sunday.
Victim Identified as Alok Kumar Singh
The deceased has been identified as Alok Kumar Singh, a resident of Kandivali and a mathematics teacher at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce & Economics in Vile Parle. Singh had joined the college in March 2024. Family members and relatives mourned his death during his funeral in Mumbai.
Incident Occurred During Platform Dispute
According to police, Singh was traveling in a second-class coach of the Churchgate-Borivali slow train with another teacher when an argument broke out with the accused. The dispute, which began inside the train, continued on Platform 1 of Malad station at around 5:30 pm. During the confrontation, the accused allegedly drew a knife and stabbed Singh in the stomach before fleeing the scene.
Victim Rushed to Hospital but Could Not Be Saved
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sunita Salunke-Thackeray said that Singh’s colleague and police personnel rushed him to Shatabdi Hospital. He was declared dead on arrival due to severe blood loss. A Western Railway official noted that the altercation appeared to have begun among passengers as they were disembarking.
Accused Apprehended Using CCTV Footage
A 27-year-old daily-wage laborer was arrested within 12 hours of the attack. Police said the accused initially tried to escape in the crowd but was later identified and apprehended with the help of CCTV footage. Further investigations by the GRP are ongoing.
