"A great day for Germany" US President congratulates CDU's win in national election

Washington: US President Donald Trump extended his congratulations to the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) following their victory in Germany’s national election. He compared the German election circumstances to the political climate in the United States, suggesting that the German populace was weary of a “no common sense agenda.”

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated, “It appears the conservative party in Germany has won a significant and highly anticipated election. Similar to the USA, the people of Germany have grown tired of the no common sense agenda, particularly regarding energy and immigration, that has persisted for many years. This is a great day for Germany and for the United States under my leadership. Congratulations to all—many more victories to come!!!”

According to exit polls, Germany’s center-right CDU is poised to regain power, with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) emerging as the second-largest party. The election focused on issues like immigration, the economy, and Trump’s potential return to the political scene. French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated Friedrich Merz, the CDU leader, while UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer expressed eagerness to collaborate with the new government. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also conveyed his desire to work with the new German administration to “protect lives.”

As the exit polls were announced, CDU headquarters erupted in cheers. However, outside, a small group of protesters voiced their opposition to Merz’s strict immigration stance. Merz celebrated his victory in Berlin, urging supporters, “Let’s get the party started,” signaling a desire to quickly commence coalition negotiations.
