AAP leaders to bring contaminated Yamuna water to BJP headquarters

New Delhi: On January 30, 2025, leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are set to visit the BJP headquarters, bringing samples of contaminated Yamuna water from Haryana. AAP claims that the water has ammonia levels of 7 parts per million (ppm), which they argue poses a threat to public health.

In a related development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has responded to AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal’s allegations, urging him not to conflate the issue of increased ammonia levels in the Yamuna with his serious claims of water poisoning and mass genocide, which he likened to acts of war. The ECI has given Kejriwal another chance to justify his statements, asking for factual evidence regarding the alleged poisoning, including specifics on the type, quantity, and detection methods used by Delhi Jal Board engineers. He must provide this information by Friday at 11 am, or the Commission will take appropriate action.

The ECI emphasized that ensuring access to clean water is a governance responsibility and that all governments should work towards this goal. It noted that there should be no dispute over this principle and that it will refrain from intervening in ongoing water-sharing and pollution disputes during the election period, especially given existing agreements and legal rulings from the Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal.

In response to the ECI, Kejriwal reiterated his accusations against the Haryana BJP government regarding the alleged poisoning of Yamuna water flowing into Delhi.
