Assam: FIR filed against Pakistan national allegedly linked to Congress MP Gogoi's wife

New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Assam Police has filed a case against Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and others under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The decision came after a cabinet meeting on February 16, where it was determined that Sheikh’s activities warranted legal action due to his alleged anti-India agenda.

The FIR was registered by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Assam Police as Case No. 05/2025, citing multiple legal provisions. CM Sarma shared the news on social media, indicating that an investigation would follow Sheikh’s connections and social media activities.

The cabinet’s resolution highlighted concerns over Sheikh’s interactions with Elizabeth Gogoi, a British national and the wife of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. It directed the state Director General of Police (DGP) to investigate whether Sheikh’s actions are part of a larger conspiracy and to identify any local sympathizers or associates.

Sarma emphasized the historical context of Assam as a target for ISI-sponsored activities, calling for increased vigilance. He noted that recent reports and social media posts linked Sheikh to attempts to disrupt communal harmony in the region. The resolution also pointed out Sheikh’s influential connections within the Pakistani government and his role in founding ‘Lead Pakistan,’ a non-profit focused on climate change, which involved Elizabeth Gogoi during her time in Islamabad.

The Assam cabinet expressed serious concerns about the involvement of a Pakistani leader in India’s internal matters, questioning the true intentions behind their operations, especially given the sensitive political climate.
