Atishi to replace Kejriwal: 5 things to know about Delhi’s new Chief Minister

New Delhi: The official announcement by Aam Aadmi Party has been made regarding the appointment of Atishi as Chief Minister. In a press conference, Minister Gopal Rai stated that till the elections are held, Atishi will serve as Chief Minister of the national capital. This decision was taken after a meeting of the legislative party chaired by Arvind Kejriwal at his Delhi residence. Arvind Kejriwal is likely to submit his resignation by evening. He will go to meet Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.

After Sushma Swaraj and Sheila Dixit, Atishi will be the third woman to become the CM of Delhi. She will be the second woman after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to hold the post of Chief Minister at present.

Who is Atishi, slated to be the Next CM?

  1. Atishi, 43, was born on June 8, 1981, to Delhi University professor Vijay Kumar Singh and Tripta Wahi. She completed her schooling at Springdale School in New Delhi. She studied History at St. Stephen’s College.

 

  1. Her quest for knowledge took her to Oxford University, where she first earned a master’s degree on a Chevening Scholarship and later a second master’s degree as a Rhodes Scholar in Educational Research.

 

  1. Atishi, who represents Delhi’s Kalkaji constituency, joined the AAP at the time of its inception. She was a key member of the party’s manifesto drafting committee for the 2013 assembly elections.

 

  1. According to the AAP, Atishi played a key role in ‘shaping the party’s policies in the early stages of its formation’.

 

  1. Currently, she is handling key portfolios in the Kejriwal-led AAP government, including Finance, Education, Public Works Department, Power, Revenue, Law, Planning, Services, Information and Publicity, and Vigilance.
