Bengaluru: Three individuals linked to the suicide of Atul Subhash—his wife Nikita Singhania, her mother Nisha Singhania, and brother Anurag Singhania—have been placed in 14-day judicial custody by Bengaluru Police. The police arrested Nikita in Gurugram, Haryana, while Nisha and Anurag were apprehended in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
Following their arrest, the accused were brought to Bengaluru, where they were presented in court. The police opened an FIR under specific sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) on December 9. Bikas Kumar, the brother of the deceased, alleged that the accused engaged in abetment of suicide and made false legal claims against Atul, demanding Rs 3 crore for a divorce settlement. He claimed his brother was mocked during court proceedings, being told he had to either pay the sum or end his life.
In contrast, Nikita’s family accused Atul of demanding a significant dowry, which they claimed led to her father’s death. Atul, who worked in the automotive sector in Bengaluru, reportedly took his life on the morning of December 9, leaving behind a 90-minute video and a troubling 40-page suicide note that detailed how he had been harassed by his wife and her relatives.
In his note, titled “Justice is Due,” Atul addressed his 2-year-old child, expressing concerns about his family and the legal system. He urged that his ashes not be scattered until those who harassed him faced punishment, and he requested that his notes and video be accepted as evidence in court. He voiced distrust in the legal process, particularly mentioning the risks of document tampering and witness pressure. He requested that his child be entrusted to his parents and reiterated that there should be no compromises with those he deemed culpable.
Atul’s family plans to immerse his ashes in the river in Bihar, their home state, following traditional customs, after collecting them from the crematorium in Bengaluru.
