New Delhi: The CBI has apprehended a BSF accountant in Delhi for allegedly accepting a Rs 40,000 bribe from a colleague in exchange for releasing his unpaid salary of Rs 18.73 lakh.
The agency filed a case on Friday against Dharmendra Kumar, Assistant Accounts Officer at the Pay and Accounts Office of BSF in Delhi, along with an unidentified person, based on a complaint from Mahesh Singh, a pharmacist from 16 Battalion, NDRF, Dwarka.
According to the complaint, Mahesh Singh claimed that Kumar demanded a bribe of 15-20% of the pending amount—approximately Rs 2 lakh—for releasing the arrears.
The demand was made via social media when Singh contacted Kumar on July 16 to inquire about the delay in payment. Singh, a resident of Bhiwani, Haryana, stated that the Rs 18.73 lakh owed to him was calculated from April 7, 1997, but had only recently been credited to the BSF’s Pay Accounts Department on July 4, 2025, yet not paid to him.
Singh explained that he did not want to pay any bribe and sought intervention from the CBI. The agency set a trap on July 18 and caught Kumar red-handed demanding Rs 2 lakh, while accepting Rs 40,000 from Singh as part of the bribe.
A verification report prior to filing the FIR indicated that the complaint and investigation provided prima facie evidence of criminal conspiracy involving Dharmendra Kumar and an unidentified individual, under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
