CM Mamata Banerjee announces removal of Kolkata Police Commissioner and others, urges doctors to return to work

Kolkata: A meeting was held on Monday between the doctors protesting for the ghastly rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. At around 11:50 pm after the conclusion of the meeting, Mamata Banerjee gave information about that in a press conference.

Agreeing on the demands of doctors, Mamata said that the Kolkata Police Commissioner would be removed. The new commissioner will take charge tomorrow at 4 pm. Along with this, the Director of Health Service, Director of Medical Education, and Deputy Commissioner of North Kolkata will also be removed. The removal of officials from their posts is one of the key demands of the protesting doctors.

Mamata said that the government has accepted three out of five demands of the doctors. She further urged them to return to work. No disciplinary action will be taken against any protesting doctor, added CM Banerjee.

At the same time, the protesting doctors say that the CM has promised to fulfill our demands, but our protest will continue until this promise turns into reality. The removal of the Police Commissioner is our moral victory.

Apart from this, another doctor said that our goal of ending the gang of corruption in the hospital is still not achieved. We will continue our protest till the Health Secretary is removed.

Junior doctors had put forward  five demands before the government. According to Mamata Banerjee, the first three demands have been met. Sanjay, accused of raping and murdering a trainee doctor, has been arrested. Former medical college principal Sandeep Ghosh and SHO of Tala police station have been arrested on charges of tampering with evidence. And now the Kolkata Police Commissioner has also been removed from his post.

Mamata said “We have accepted 99% of the demands of the doctors, because they are our younger brothers. 42 people signed the minutes of the meeting on behalf of the junior doctors, while Chief Secretary Manoj Pant signed on behalf of the government. I think the meeting was positive.”

Mamata Banerjee has also accepted the demand to upgrade hospital infrastructure like CCTV, and washrooms and has allocated Rs 100 crore for this. Apart from this, Mamata said that the Director of Health Service and Director of Medical Education will be posted at appropriate posts. We cannot insult them.
