New Delhi: Delhi Police have arrested a 23-year-old man, Madhav Singh, from Pratap Nagar, Amritsar, for allegedly extorting money from a woman and threatening to share her private pictures online. The arrest followed a cybercrime investigation.
The victim, who had befriended Singh on social media, filed a complaint at the Cyber Police Station in North West District. She reported that, after gaining access to her private pictures through their frequent interactions, Singh started blackmailing her and demanded Rs 5 lakh. He allegedly threatened to post the photos online if she failed to meet his demands.
A case was registered under sections 308(2) and 78 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and an investigation was initiated. Police discovered that the accused was using multiple fake Instagram accounts and did not share any personal details or contact information.
Using advanced cyber forensic methods, the police traced his digital footprint, identified him, and arrested him. During questioning, Singh admitted to the crime, claiming he engaged in such activities for amusement. Authorities have seized the mobile phone used in the offense.
The investigation is ongoing, with police efforts focused on identifying additional victims or accomplices involved in similar cybercrimes.
