Drugs worth Rs 78 crore seized in Tripura, one held

Agartala: In a significant operation, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, seized 3.9 lakh methamphetamine tablets valued at approximately Rs 78 crore and arrested a drug peddler in Tripura.

Officials reported that this successful operation was well-coordinated and executed, which marks a serious blow to the drug trafficking network in the northeastern region.

Acting on precise intelligence, security forces intercepted the large consignment of methamphetamine tablets, known as Yaba, in the Gonda Twisa area of Dhalai district late on Friday night. Rakesh Miya, a 33-year-old resident of Melaghar in Sepahijala district, was apprehended during the operation.

The Assam Rifles emphasized that this accomplishment reinforces their commitment to combatting cross-border drug trafficking and protecting the youth in the region. The methamphetamine tablets, notorious for their harmful impact on individuals and communities, are often targeted by drug syndicates preying on vulnerable populations.

With Union Home Minister Amit Shah visiting the state and security forces on heightened alert, this operation demonstrates the effective collaboration among the Assam Rifles, Customs Department, and Tripura Police in the fight against organized crime.

Additionally, between November 20 and December 20, drugs valued at around Rs 280 crore, including heroin and methamphetamine tablets, were seized across Mizoram, Tripura, and Assam, all smuggled in from Myanmar. The northeastern states, particularly Mizoram, southern Assam, and Tripura, serve as conduits for drug trafficking due to their extensive, largely unfenced border with Myanmar, which stretches 1,643 km and borders four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh (520 km), Manipur (398 km), Nagaland (215 km), and Mizoram (510 km). Further investigations are currently underway to dismantle the network linked to this drug shipment.
