"First step towards national service is voting," says CEC Gyanesh Kumar

Madurai: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar has called on all eligible Indian citizens to register as voters and actively take part in the electoral process, highlighting that voting is the initial step towards serving the nation. “Voting is the first step towards national service. I urge all citizens who are 18 years or older to register as electors and make their voices heard. The Election Commission of India is committed to supporting the voters,” CEC Kumar stated during a press interaction.

He mentioned his recent visit to Madurai, where he evaluated the progress of the electoral process with the Chief Electoral Officer, District Election Officers, and senior police officials, commending their efforts and wishing the voters in Madurai success.

Additionally, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to hold a conference for Chief Electoral Officers from various States and Union Territories on March 4-5 at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi. Gyanesh Kumar encouraged all State CEOs to share insights and learn from each other’s experiences during this two-day event.

The conference will see over 100 participants, including State/UT CEOs, District Election Officers (DEOs), and Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), who are essential to the electoral framework.

Earlier this month, Gyanesh Kumar took charge as the newly appointed CEC on February 19. In his message to voters, he reiterated that voting is crucial for nation-building. He is a 1988-batch IAS officer from the Kerala cadre and is the senior member of a three-person panel headed by Rajiv Kumar. The other commissioners are Sukhbir Singh Sandhu from the Uttarakhand cadre and Vivek Joshi, who also recently assumed his role as Election Commissioner following a Gazette notification from the Ministry of Law & Justice dated February 17, 2025. Vivek Joshi is a 1989-batch IAS officer from the Haryana cadre.
