Agartala: In the past 24 hours, police in Tripura have arrested four individuals, including two retired teachers, for making controversial social media posts related to the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Officials reported the arrests from three different districts.

A police spokesperson informed that retired teacher Jawahar Debnath and student leader Kuldip Mandal were apprehended in Ambassa, located in the Dhalai district. Another retired teacher, Sajal Chakraborty, was arrested in Dharmanagar, in the northern part of Tripura. Additionally, a youth named Jahirul Islam was taken into custody in Sonamura, within the Sepahijala district.

The four individuals are facing charges under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. They will be presented in court in their respective subdivisions as the police seek custody.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Jitendra Chaudhury, a member of the CPI-M politburo, asserted that Debnath and Mandal did not make any anti-national comments; rather, their posts were intended to promote national integration.

Tripura police issued a statement on their X handle, noting that they are aware of individuals circulating provocative and misleading messages on social media. “Please be aware that forwarding, sharing, or creating such content is an offense under the law. Stringent legal action will be taken against those involved in such activities,” the police warned.

They also advised citizens to refrain from engaging with or forwarding any provocative messages and urged them to report any unlawful activity immediately to the police.

Meanwhile, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha held a meeting on Friday, directing the Superintendents of Police (SPs) from all eight districts to regularly report any information about the presence of Pakistani nationals in the state to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. An official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) added that DMs in all eight districts were instructed to maintain vigilance and promptly inform the administration of any related concerns in light of the Pahalgam incident.

These directives were made during a high-level video conference at the state secretariat, where the Chief Minister reviewed the law and order situation, ongoing development initiatives, and readiness for the upcoming monsoon season.
