Heavy rains disrupt normal lives in Delhi-NCR, key roads waterlogged

New Delhi: Ongoing heavy rains since Monday morning have caused widespread chaos in Delhi-NCR, with Greater Noida experiencing severe waterlogging that has highlighted longstanding issues with drainage. The persistent showers have led to flooded streets and stranded commuters, creating turmoil, especially in the Surajpur and Malakpur neighborhoods.

Large portions of Greater Noida, notably around the Surajpur administrative zone and Gol Chakkar intersection, have been submerged under knee-deep water. Main roads extending up to a kilometer have been affected, leaving motorists and pedestrians to navigate through stagnant floodwaters.

A resident, Satyaprakash from Surajpur, expressed frustration, saying, “This happens every year after rain; we have to carry our shoes before walking.” He pointed out the recurring nature of the problem, which persists despite repeated complaints to civic authorities.

The situation worsened near Gol Chakkar, a busy junction, where accumulated water disrupted vehicle movement and left many pedestrians walking through flooded lanes. Pappu Kumar, another local resident, added, “The water remains stagnant here constantly; it’s an ongoing problem for everyone, including office-goers. It’s the same every monsoon.”

Residents have criticized the local authorities for not addressing the persistent drainage issues, despite multiple complaints and reassurances, which results in roads being submerged year after year.

In addition to Greater Noida, the wider Delhi-NCR region has seen significant traffic disruptions. Vehicles moved slowly on NH-48 connecting Gurugram and Delhi, and long queues formed on the Outer Ring Road heading toward ISBT Kashmiri Gate.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts continued rainfall in the coming days, with light to moderate showers and thunderstorms expected across Delhi, Haryana (including Gurugram, Rewari, Palwal, and Sonipat), and western Uttar Pradesh regions such as Aligarh, Bulandshahr, and Meerut.
