Heavy rains forecast for western Tamil Nadu districts today and tomorrow

Tamil Nadu: Heavy rainfall is expected in certain districts of western Tamil Nadu today and tomorrow, according to the Chennai-based Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).

The latest weather bulletin indicates that districts such as Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Krishnagiri, and Dharmapuri are likely to experience intense showers on Monday and Tuesday.

The broader forecast for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal suggests scattered light to moderate rainfall till May 22, providing some relief from the summer heat, though showers are expected to be irregular.

In Chennai, the weather is anticipated to remain mostly cloudy with comfortable conditions. Temperatures are expected to stay between 34-35°C during the day and around 27-28°C at night. Some parts of the city may receive brief, light to moderate showers, offering temporary respite from the warmth.

The southwest monsoon continues its steady progression, with conditions remaining favorable for further advance into the south Arabian Sea, Maldives, the Coromandel coast, and parts of the Bay of Bengal over the next few days.

Data from the last 24 hours shows Hogenakkal in Dharmapuri recorded the highest rainfall at 12 cm, followed by Panjapatti in Karur with 10 cm.

With the monsoon forecast to move further inland and isolated heavy rainfall anticipated, authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and adhere to local advisories. Farmers and others relying on rainfall for agriculture are advised to monitor updates closely, as the onset and spread of monsoon showers could influence major crop planting decisions, such as for Kuruvai paddy.
