Protest erupts in Northwest Delhi over demolition of Mosque, Police says illegal encroachment

New Delhi: In the northwest part of Delhi, a protest broke out in the Mongolpuri area on Tuesday due to the demolition of a mosque that was built on DDA land. The police say this structure is an illegal encroachment on this land.

Before the demolition took place, police personnel were deployed; even locals pelted the stones at MCD and police.

According to a police official, the MCD, along with the local police and a company of paramilitary forces, reached the Y block of Mongolpuri in the morning to demolish the illegal encroachment.

Local people pelted stones at MCD and Delhi Police, who came to demolish an illegal mosque in Mangolpuri.

As the demolition drive started early morning at 6 a.m., locals gathered at the spot and started protesting, the officer said.

After demolishing a few walls of the mosque, the demolition has been temporarily halted because some of the walls of the mosque require heavy machines.
