India Braces for Monsoon Flooding Amid Surge in Heavy Rainfall

Monsoon rains have now knocked in many states of India like Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rains in many districts, while some areas have also recorded the hottest day of the month of June.

On Thursday, 120 mm of rain was recorded in Firozabad, UP, causing waterlogging in many areas. At the same time, light to moderate rains occurred in more than 25 districts including Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Meerut, Bareilly, Lucknow. The Meteorological Department has forecast that the rain may become more widespread and intense on Friday, June 20.

The monsoon has now gained full speed in North India. The scope of rain that started in the southern parts of Uttar Pradesh from Wednesday has now spread to the Terai, central and western areas. The Meteorological Department has issued an orange and yellow alert of heavy rain in many districts of UP on Friday.

There is an orange alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall in 12 districts including Banda, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Prayagraj, Sonbhadra, while a yellow alert has been issued in 23 districts. Lightning and thunderstorm warnings have been issued in more than 55 districts. Firozabad recorded 120 mm of rain in 24 hours, while districts like Agra, Mathura, Aligarh, Lucknow, Meerut also received light to moderate rain.

On the other hand, 4 people have died due to two days of heavy rain in Jharkhand. Rivers are in spate and there are flood-like conditions in many areas.

In Maharashtra, there is an orange alert of heavy rain in Mumbai, Raigad, Thane and Ratnagiri. Rivers are flowing above the danger mark in Raigad and schools and colleges have been closed in many areas.

Srinagar recorded a temperature of 35.2 degrees on Thursday, which was the hottest day of June in 20 years. According to the Meteorological Department, monsoon may reach Delhi, Himachal and Punjab in the next few days.
