New Delhi: Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu unveiled the Electronic Personnel License (EPL) for pilots, marking a significant advancement in the digital transformation of India’s civil aviation sector, aimed at improving safety, security, and efficiency.
With this launch, India becomes the second nation globally, after China, to adopt the EPL for flight crews. Naidu remarked that the introduction of EPL by the DGCA represents not only progress for aviation but also a leap toward broader digitalization across various sectors.
He emphasized that this initiative will provide greater convenience, transparency, and efficiency for pilots, positioning India at the forefront of technological innovations in aviation. The minister noted that given the rapid growth of Indian civil aviation, the country will need at least 20,000 additional pilots in the coming years to meet the increasing demand for air travel, as India is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets worldwide.
Naidu highlighted the vital role of aviation in enhancing connectivity, fostering economic development, and advancing technology. The sector is set for substantial growth, with plans for 50 new airports in the next five years and the addition of 120 new domestic destinations over the next decade.
He stated, “Consequently, the need for 20,000 more pilots makes initiatives like EPL essential to meet this demand.” The minister also underscored the growing influence of technology in aviation, from operational processes to regulatory measures, and its critical role in transforming the industry. He shared future plans, including the creation of digital twin systems for airports to facilitate real-time decision-making and a continued push for innovative, technology-driven solutions.
A senior pilot affiliated with an Indian airline expressed support for the EPL, stating that its introduction will simplify processes. “As a pilot, I eagerly anticipate the EPL, as it will streamline operations and allow us to concentrate on what is most important—ensuring safe and efficient travel for everyone. This development reflects the ongoing evolution of Indian aviation,” he noted.
