Indian Railways, DFCCIL to boost train safety with AI technology

New Delhi: Indian Railways has taken a major step to enhance train safety and streamline maintenance by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL). The agreement focuses on the deployment of the Machine Vision Based Inspection System (MVIS), an advanced AI and machine learning technology designed to automatically inspect the undercarriage of moving trains.

MVIS captures high-resolution images of train components from the wayside and detects any loose, hanging, or missing parts. When anomalies are identified, the system promptly generates real-time alerts to enable immediate response and preventive measures.

The MoU was signed at Rail Bhawan by Sumit Kumar, Director (Project and Development) of the Railway Board, and Jawahar Lal, GGM (Mechanical) of DFCCIL. Under this agreement, DFCCIL will be responsible for procuring, supplying, installing, testing, and commissioning four MVIS units.

This innovative system is a first for Indian Railways and is expected to considerably improve train safety, reduce the need for manual inspections, and help prevent accidents or service disruptions. The initiative aligns with the broader goal of integrating modern, intelligent technologies into the railway ecosystem to promote digital transformation and build a future-ready rail infrastructure.

In addition to technological advancements, Indian Railways has been actively expanding its workforce, issuing over 9,000 appointment letters in the first quarter of the 2025-26 fiscal year. The railway recruitment boards have conducted large-scale recruitment drives, including computer-based tests for over 1.86 crore candidates across seven notifications since November 2024, with plans to create more than 50,000 jobs by the end of the year.
