IndiGo to start new routes to connect Assam's cities with India's major hubs: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that IndiGo will launch new flight routes connecting Assam’s cities to major Indian hubs. He also confirmed that the long-awaited Jorhat-Delhi route will commence operations from September 20.

Sarma shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Good news for Assam’s air travelers! Following my discussions with IndiGo management, the airline will introduce new routes to link Assam’s cities with key destinations across the country. The much-demanded Jorhat-Delhi route will also be operational from September 20.”

Further confirming the development, IndiGo revealed that it will start direct flights between Delhi and Jorhat starting September 20, 2025, with four weekly services. Additionally, from September 16, 2025, the airline will operate daily direct flights connecting Delhi with Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu.

These new routes aim to strengthen connectivity between Delhi and northeastern India, as well as southern Tamil Nadu. The increased connectivity is expected to boost tourism, facilitate trade, and support local businesses in the regions.

Vinay Malhotra, Head of Global Sales at IndiGo, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, saying, “We are delighted to introduce exclusive direct flights from Delhi to Jorhat and Tiruchirappalli, reaffirming our dedication to expanding domestic connectivity. These daily flights will offer affordable travel options and help travelers explore the diverse cultural, spiritual, and natural attractions of these regions.”

Jorhat, a vital cultural and economic hub in the northeast, is known for its proximity to Majuli — the world’s largest river island and a center of Vaishnavite culture. It is renowned for its tea industry, producing some of the finest teas worldwide, and serves as a key point for agriculture and trade. The city is also close to Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which boosts eco-tourism and local livelihoods.

Earlier, on March 7, IndiGo announced the launch of a direct flight service connecting Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu with Jaffna, Sri Lanka, starting March 30, 2025. This route aims to meet rising demand and provides more options for travelers seeking to connect South India with Jaffna’s historical and cultural sites. The daily flights are expected to facilitate easier travel, foster economic development, and promote cultural exchanges between the two regions.

Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), a prominent city in Tamil Nadu, is famed for its religious sites such as Rockfort Temple and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple. As an educational and industrial center, home to NIT Trichy and a thriving manufacturing sector, Trichy is a crucial gateway to southern India, supported by its strategic location and well-developed infrastructure.
