J-K: Doda police organise workshop to raise awareness about three new criminal laws

Doda: To raise awareness about new criminal laws, Doda Police conducted a workshop for students and faculty at the Bhaderwah Campus in Lal-Ded Auditorium. The session, held on Wednesday, focused on three new laws: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).

Superintendent of Police (SP) Vinod Sharma emphasized that the workshop educated participants about their rights. “Doda police initiated the program to raise awareness about the three new criminal laws. The attendees, including students and faculty members, appreciated our initiative as we informed them about their rights and the police’s role in protecting them,” said SP Sharma. He also discussed the key features of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and highlighted the significance of the legal reforms in enhancing police operations and ensuring efficient justice delivery.

On February 20, Union Home Minister Amit Shah stressed the need for the enforcement of “trial in absentia” provisions and the full implementation of the new criminal laws in Jammu and Kashmir by April 2025 during a meeting with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. He urged the UT administration to leverage technology for expedited justice under the new laws, which replace the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act.

Shah stated that the progress in implementing these laws should be monitored frequently at various administrative levels—monthly for the Chief Minister, fortnightly for the Chief Secretary, and weekly for the Director General of Police. He emphasized that for successful implementation, it is crucial to change the mindset of police personnel and the administration while raising public awareness about the new laws.
