J&K CM Omar Abdullah opposes Chenab River water diversion to Punjab; Sparks political storm

Jammu, June 20: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has made a strong statement refusing to allow the diversion of water from the Chenab River to Punjab, intensifying the political debate over water-sharing between the two regions.

Why should I send water to Punjab?

Omar Abdullah questioned Punjab’s past response to J&K’s water needs. “Under the Indus Water Treaty, Punjab already received its share of rivers. But when Jammu and Kashmir needed water, they didn’t offer a drop. Now they want our water? I will not allow it,” he asserted.

Focus on J&K’s needs first

Highlighting the current water crisis in Jammu, Omar said his government’s top priority is to ensure water availability within the Unio territory. Projects such as lifting water from Akhnoor and work on the Tulbul navigation barrage are being expedited to address the shortage.

Political reaction builds

The remarks have drawn sharp political reactions, with critics calling it a bold stand for J&K’s rights, while others accuse Omar of politicizing a sensitive issue. However, public sentiment in the region seems to support the CM’s firm stance.
