Kerala: Man accused of killing 5 family members sent to police remand after attempted suicide

Thiruvananthapuram: Affan, a 23-year-old man accused of murdering five family members, attempted suicide by ingesting poison and was admitted to a hospital on Friday. The police reported that his condition has improved, and they have now recorded his arrest after interrogating him. Since he remains hospitalized, the magistrate visited the hospital to grant police remand.

According to Kerala police, Affan, who allegedly killed his 14-year-old brother, grandmother, uncle, aunt, and girlfriend in Venjaramoodu on February 24, is now in stable condition. His mother, who was also attacked, is in critical condition at a medical college hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. Abdul Raheem Hassan Kunju, a family member currently in Saudi Arabia, has returned to Thiruvananthapuram.

The District Police Chief, Sudarsan K S, stated that the family was experiencing financial difficulties, and Affan had borrowed Rs 40,000 from a financial institution. He indicated that Affan claimed the family was contemplating suicide, although the veracity of this statement has yet to be confirmed. While Affan is recovering, doctors mentioned he would need 2-3 days before discharge. His mother is also improving; although she can talk, she cannot remember the events that transpired. Investigations continue, with blood samples taken for medical testing. The accused has admitted to killing his family members and girlfriend across three different locations and later consumed poison, necessitating his urgent medical care.
