Kharge extends Republic Day greetings, slams Centre's policies

New Delhi: On the occasion of India’s 76th Republic Day, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge extended his warm wishes to the nation, highlighting the significance of 75 years since the adoption of the Indian Constitution.

Kharge emphasized the Constitution as the “conscience keeper and soul of the Indian Republic” and paid tribute to its architects, including Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and others who played pivotal roles in shaping the nation.

He acknowledged the sacrifices of the Armed Forces, paramilitary personnel, and security forces in maintaining the country’s integrity and sovereignty. Additionally, he expressed gratitude to scientists, teachers, and farmers for their invaluable contributions to nation-building, recognizing their roles in making India a knowledge hub and ensuring food security.

Kharge also appreciated the efforts of daily wage workers, laborers, gig workers, artists, writers, and athletes, underscoring their importance in fostering the nation’s cultural diversity.

However, his message included sharp criticism of the current government. He raised concerns about the state of democracy and governance, accusing the ruling party of undermining institutions and diminishing federalism.

“Political interference in autonomous institutions has become commonplace. The ruling government views control over these institutions as a display of power. Federalism is being eroded, and the rights of opposition-led states are being restricted. The functioning of Parliament has significantly declined due to the ruling party’s authoritarian tendencies,” Kharge stated.

He pointed out that universities and self-governing bodies are facing constant encroachment, and much of the media has turned into a propaganda vehicle for the government. He criticized the suppression of dissent through the targeting of opposition leaders.

Kharge also expressed concern over the ongoing crisis in Manipur, which he noted has persisted for 21 months without accountability from the highest levels of power.

He concluded by urging the protection of the Constitution’s fundamental values of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, warning that these principles are being undermined by an authoritarian regime. He called for a collective effort to safeguard the Constitution, stating that this would be the true homage to the nation’s founders.

His message ended with the rallying cry: “Jai Bapu, Jai Bheem, Jai Samvidhaan. Jai Hind.”
