Lucknow man arrested with over 5,000 bottles of fake cough syrup

Lucknow: In a crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN) has apprehended one individual and confiscated over 5,300 bottles of counterfeit cough syrup from a residence in Lucknow, officials announced on Friday.

The seized syrup was found to be adulterated with banned sedatives and falsely labeled to imitate genuine products from well-known pharmaceutical brands, according to a senior official.

Deputy Narcotics Commissioner Praveen Bali told media that, based on specific intelligence, authorities raided a house on Thursday and recovered 5,353 bottles of cough syrup. He explained that the syrup was uniquely manufactured with drugs like Alprazolam and Clonazepam and was falsely labeled as Codeine Syrup by attaching fake labels of reputed companies.

The official added that the person involved did not possess any legal paperwork or license to store or sell such medicines. The entire stock was seized under the NDPS Act, 1985, and one individual has been taken into custody.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the broader network involved in this illegal drug trade in Lucknow.
