Maha Kumbh likely to generate over Rs 4 lakh crore in trade, boost India's economy

New Delhi: With the Maha Kumbh set to commence in Prayagraj at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers starting Monday, this largest religious gathering in the world is projected to generate over Rs 4 lakh crore in trade, significantly boosting India’s economy.

Industry estimates suggest that the event could enhance both nominal and real GDP by over 1%. The Uttar Pradesh government anticipates around 40 crore attendees, both from India and abroad.

If each visitor spends an average of Rs 5,000, it could result in Rs 2 lakh crore in trade. However, with estimates indicating that average spending might rise to Rs 10,000 per person at this grand event, the overall economic impact could reach Rs 4 lakh crore.

Companies from India and internationally are competing for space to establish their presence during the 45-day festival. Sectors ranging from fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) to pharmaceuticals, along with mobility providers and digital payment platforms, are expected to invest over Rs 3,000 crore in marketing and branding efforts at Maha Kumbh, according to industry analysts.

Public sector giant Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has contributed around 45,000 tonnes of steel for the construction of various facilities at the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025. This steel includes chequered plates, hot strip mill plates, mild steel plates, angles, and joists, as detailed in a company statement.

In preparation for this extensive gathering of Sanatan Dharma followers, Prayagraj has undergone significant redevelopment. Over 200 roads have been constructed and upgraded to ensure smooth connectivity for the millions of expected visitors. Additionally, the aesthetic appeal of the roads has been enhanced with the planting of more than 3 lakh plants and 1 lakh horticultural samples.
