Manipur HC asks probe committee to file report on missing Meitei man once in every two weeks

Manipur: The Manipur High Court has instructed the inquiry committee investigating the disappearance of a 56-year-old man from the Meitei community to submit reports every two weeks. The court, led by Chief Justice D Krishnakumar and Justice Golmei Gaiphulshillu Kabui, is overseeing the investigation into Laisram Kamalbabu Singh, who went missing while traveling from his residence in Gossaipur, Assam, to the Leimakhong military station on November 25, where he was employed as a supervisor for a contractor associated with the Military Engineering Services (MES).

The court noted that CCTV footage has been collected and sent for forensic analysis as part of the investigation. A four-member inquiry committee, headed by the District Magistrate of Kangpokpi and including the Superintendents of Police from Kangpokpi and Imphal West Districts and the Commanding Officer of the 57 Mountain Division, has been established to look into the case.

Despite a significant search effort involving around 2,000 soldiers from the Army and Assam Rifles, Kamalbabu Singh has been missing for 26 days. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) and the Meira Paibis, local women’s vigilante groups, have urged Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to help locate him. The JAC has also met with Chief Minister N. Biren Singh to discuss intensifying the search efforts in light of the situation.
