Mizoram: Assam Rifles, Police seize drugs worth Rs71.15 crores in Champhai, one held

Champhai: Assam Rifles and Zokhawthar Police conducted a joint operation that led to the recovery of a significant amount of narcotics in the Vangkai area of Zokhawthar, Champhai district, Mizoram. Acting on credible intelligence, the security forces intercepted a shipment and seized 7.1 kg of Methamphetamine tablets and 3.1 kg of Crystal Methamphetamine, valued at approximately Rs 71.15 crore. They apprehended a 59-year-old man named Vanlalruaia from Chhinga Veng, Aizawl, in connection with the drugs. Both the individual and the narcotics were transferred to Zokhawthar Police for further investigation and legal action.

In a separate operation on the same day, Assam Rifles and Manipur Police arrested five individuals and recovered firearms in Kangpokpi, Imphal West, and Bushnupur districts. Following specific intelligence about the presence of weapons in Tingkhai Khullen village, located about 12 km south of Kotlen village in Kangpokpi district, the security forces launched a search that resulted in the recovery of an automatic rifle, a .32 mm pistol, a .22 mm pistol, four single-barrel rifles, a mortar, and various ammunition and supplies.

Additionally, on February 18, Manipur Police arrested Romeo Laishram, a supporter of the KCP (PWG) organization, at his residence in Yurembam Awang Leikai, Imphal West District. They confiscated a 7.65 mm pistol with a magazine containing five rounds, a white ammunition box with ten additional rounds of 7.65 mm ammunition, a pistol holster, and an Aadhaar card.

The smuggling of illegal contraband remains a significant issue in Mizoram. The Assam Rifles, known as the ‘Sentinels of Northeast,’ have intensified their efforts to combat illegal smuggling activities and target the key figures involved in the trafficking of these illicit substances in the region.
