Moments after India claimed Champions Trophy, communal tension erupts in MP's Mhow

Bhopal: After India’s victory in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, celebrations in Mhow, near Indore in Madhya Pradesh, turned violent late on Sunday night. The festive mood quickly shifted as tensions arose between two communities in the Jama Masjid area, triggered by a dispute over firecrackers. This led to stone-pelting, which spread to several other locations, including Manak Chowk, Patti Bazaar, and Market Chowk.

The situation worsened when two groups clashed, escalating the conflict. Videos surfaced showing people from one community throwing stones at cricket fans celebrating India’s win. In response, police deployed a heavy presence, and additional security forces were brought in to control the situation.

Despite the police presence, stone-pelting continued, with some individuals even carrying weapons. The violence escalated further, with shops and vehicles being set on fire and petrol bombs being used. Authorities responded with mild force, including lathi charges and tear gas, in an effort to disperse the crowd. Reports indicated that several vehicles were damaged and set ablaze, and two houses and four shops were also affected.

While the police managed to regain control of the situation, the area remained tense. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, and authorities are working to restore order. The unrest came shortly after India’s victory in the Champions Trophy, which had sparked widespread celebrations across the country.
