Mumbai: Chembur shop fire death toll increases to seven

At least seven individuals, including two children from a single family, lost their lives in a tragic fire at a shop in Chembur, Mumbai, on Sunday. The incident occurred around 5:20 am in a multi-storey building located at plot no 16/1, Sidharth Colony, KN Gaikwad Marg, Chembur (E), claiming the lives of the Gupta family.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, “Seven people, including three children, died after a fire erupted at a shop in Chembur around 5 am today.” All victims belonged to the Gupta family, identified as Presi Prem Gupta (6), Manju Prem Gupta (30), Anita Dharamdev Gupta (39), Prem Chediram Gupta (30), Narendra Gupta (10), Vidhi Chediram Gupta (15), and Gita Devi Dharamdev Gupta (60).

Hemraj Singh Rajput, DCP of Zone 6, stated that the family lived on the upper two floors of the G+2 building, with the shop situated on the ground floor. “We received a call around 6 am… Seven people died, and two individuals who were sleeping in the shop managed to escape. Our team, along with the fire brigade, will investigate the exact cause of the fire,” Rajput explained.

The fire reportedly broke out due to a short circuit in the electrical wiring located near the shop on the ground floor. Emergency rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene to extinguish the flames. Further details are still pending.
