Guwahati: Assam Police intercepted a narcotics trafficking attempt in the Sribhumi district, seizing drugs valued at Rs 2 crore, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday.

The drugs were confiscated in the Sadarashi area of the district. Police arrested two individuals in connection with the case.

On his X handle, CM Sarma shared, “Rs 2 crore worth of YABA tablets seized in an anti-drug operation. @sribhumipolice recovered 10,000 YABA tablets at Sadarashi, and two peddlers have been detained. Kudos to @assampolice.”

The police took legal action under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Last week, Assam Police also seized drugs worth Rs 9.5 crore and arrested three peddlers, including a woman, during two separate operations.

According to a police spokesperson, credible intelligence indicated the movement of contraband from Silchar in southern Assam to Guwahati via the Silchar–Coimbatore Express train. A team from Panbazar Police station was stationed at Guwahati railway station.

They identified and detained a female suspect named Parvina Khatun Bibi, 31, upon the train’s arrival. A search in her presence led to the recovery of 20,000 methamphetamine tablets valued at Rs 5 crore, along with her mobile phone and Rs 1,000 in cash. She hails from Sadialer Khuti village in Cooch Behar district, West Bengal.

In another raid at Salchapra in Silchar, police arrested two peddlers and seized 847 grams of heroin and over 4 kg of opium, with an estimated worth of Rs 4.5 crore. Authorities suspect the drugs originated from Myanmar, entering Assam through hidden routes.

Myanmar shares a 1,643 km border with four northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram—making it a key transit point for drug trafficking, especially heroin and methamphetamine tablets. Chin State in Myanmar is known as a major hub for smuggling various contraband, including drugs and wildlife, into the Indian states through six Mizoram districts.
