New Delhi: In the corruption case related to Delhi liquor policy, Rouse Avenue Court extended the judicial custody of CM Arvind Kejriwal till August 8. He was produced in the court through video conferencing from Tihar Jail. Earlier, on July 12, the court had extended the CBI judicial custody of CM Kejriwal till July 25. Today he was produced in court through video conferencing and custody was extended till July 12.
Earlier on July 17, the Delhi High Court had reserved its decision on Arvind Kejriwal’s petition challenging the CBI’s arrest and the interim bail plea. After a debate that lasted for about two and a half hours, the court had said that the bail plea would be heard on July 29.
During the hearing, Kejriwal’s lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that Arvind Kejriwal is the people’s elected Chief Minister, not a terrorist. Referring to former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Singhvi said that Imran Khan was recently released, but he was arrested again in another case. This cannot happen in our country.
At the same time, on July 12, the Supreme Court granted interim bail to Kejriwal. While granting bail, Justice Sanjeev Khanna had said that Kejriwal has been in jail for 90 days. Therefore, we order his release. We know that he is an elected leader and it is up to him to decide whether he wants to remain the Chief Minister or not. Kejriwal had to remain in jail as bail was granted in the case of ED and right now Delhi CM is in custody of CBI.
Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on March 21. After that, the Rouse Avenue Court sent him to custody. The second case against him is of the CBI.
