One person dead, two loses eyesight after consuming spurious liquor in Muzaffarpur

Bihar: After the tragic deaths of 33 individuals from consuming toxic liquor in Siwan and Gopalganj, another incident has emerged in the Hathori Police Station area of Muzaffarpur, where one person has died and two others have been hospitalized for similar reasons. Police identified the deceased as 25-year-old Shyam Sahni, who had gone out for a liquor party with friends. After returning home, his health rapidly deteriorated, leading to his loss of vision. He was admitted to Shree Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH), where he later died despite medical efforts. The other two affected, Mukesh Sahni and Virodhi Sahni, have also suffered vision loss and are receiving treatment, with Mukesh in critical condition. Authorities are actively raiding locations associated with this illegal trade, continuing their investigation.

RJD spokesperson Priyanka Bharti criticized the state government for neglecting the suffering of the people, stating, “In Muzaffarpur, many have lost their eyesight, and some have died from drinking poisonous liquor. If BJP and JDU leaders have time to spare from divisive politics, they should pay attention to the plight of this woman. You have destroyed her life,” she posted on X.

Earlier, on October 18, 33 fatalities occurred due to spurious liquor consumption in Gopalganj and Siwan. Gopalganj Superintendent of Police Awdhesh Dixit reported that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is investigating the situation, with 14 people arrested in connection with the tragedy. He noted, “Two individuals have died under suspicious circumstances, and 4-5 others are currently receiving treatment. The SIT is actively conducting raids and identifying those who may have consumed illicit liquor, with the arrests totaling 14 and over 200 locations raided. We have also seized and destroyed more than 5,000 liters of raw materials.”

Meanwhile, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad stated that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s government has been responding effectively to the crisis, as a political blame game has erupted with opposition parties questioning the effectiveness of the liquor ban instituted by the Nitish Kumar administration.
