PM Modi pays tribute to Pandit Nehru on 135th birth anniversary

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, on the occasion of his 135th birth anniversary today.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister expressed, “On the occasion of his birth anniversary, I pay homage to our former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.”

Born on November 14, 1889, in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), Uttar Pradesh, Nehru received his education at prestigious institutions like Harrow School in London and the University of Cambridge.

According to the official PM India portal, Nehru attended the Bankipore Congress as a delegate in 1912 and became the Secretary of the Home Rule League in Allahabad in 1919. He first met Mahatma Gandhi in 1916, which significantly influenced his political journey. Nehru led the inaugural Kisan March in Pratapgarh District, Uttar Pradesh, in 1920 and was imprisoned twice for his role in the Non-Cooperation Movement from 1920 to 1922.

Nehru’s birth anniversary is also recognized as Children’s Day in India, reflecting his deep affection for children. Known as ‘Chacha Nehru’ for his fondness for the young, he was dedicated to their welfare and education.

Following his death in 1964, it was decided that November 14 would be celebrated as Children’s Day to honor his legacy. The first official celebration occurred in 1965, establishing an annual tradition aimed at promoting children’s rights and highlighting their vital role in shaping India’s future.

The day serves as an important reminder of India’s dedication to its younger generation. Schools and institutions across the country host cultural events, competitions, and activities to celebrate the occasion and raise awareness about children’s rights, welfare, and education.
