Guwahati (Assam): Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that police have made arrests related to individuals allegedly supporting Pakistan amid heightened tensions following the recent Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.

Sarma stated that the Cachar Police arrested two individuals for sharing pro-Pakistan content on social media. The suspects, identified as Baktar Hussain Barbhuiya from Ramnagar under Sonai police station and Md. Imran Hussain Borbhuiya from Malugram Ganiwala under Silchar police station, were taken into custody.

He also reported that Md Mustak Ahmed was arrested late Friday night for posting “Pakistan Zindabad” on Facebook; he resides in Saykut village under the jurisdiction of the Karimganj police station.

Earlier in the day, Sarma condemned individuals making “anti-national” posts on social media and revealed the arrest of a young man from Hajo town in the Kamrup district. He mentioned that the government is closely monitoring social media activity and plans to take action against posts deemed anti-national, warning that those who support Pakistan, either directly or indirectly, may face charges under the National Security Act (NSA).

“A youth was also arrested from Hajo this morning. We are examining the posted content, and we will act against any posts that are anti-national. Anyone supporting Pakistan will be prosecuted under the NSA. We will enforce strict measures,” Sarma stated to reporters.

His comments came after the release of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) election manifesto at the party headquarters in Guwahati for the upcoming Panchayat elections, scheduled for May 2 and May 7, respectively, with vote counting set for May 11.

The nation is mourning the tragic deaths of the 26 individuals killed in the Pahalgam terror attack, which also resulted in numerous injuries. This attack occurred in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday.

In response to Pakistan’s ties to cross-border terrorism, India has implemented strong countermeasures, including a temporary suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. This decision was made during a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting on April 23, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by key ministers including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
