Prez Murmu extends warm wishes on Basant Panchami

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu conveyed her heartfelt wishes to the nation on the auspicious occasion of Basant Panchami and Saraswati Puja, celebrated this Sunday.

In a message on X, President Murmu stated, “Heartfelt greetings to all countrymen on Basant Panchami and Saraswati Puja! On this joyous occasion linked to education and knowledge, I wish happiness, prosperity, and wisdom for everyone.”

Highlighting the day’s importance, she remarked, “I pray to Maa Saraswati to position India as the knowledge hub of the world.”

Basant Panchami, also known as Vasanta Panchami and Saraswati Puja, is a festival dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, marking the onset of spring. The festival is celebrated across various regions in India, each with its own unique customs.

This occasion also initiates preparations for Holika and Holi, which are celebrated forty days later.

The Vasant Utsav is observed forty days before the peak of spring, symbolizing this transitional phase. Basant Panchami is further associated with the bright yellow mustard fields in bloom, representing a color deeply tied to Goddess Saraswati.

On this day, it is customary for people to wear yellow attire—saris, tops, or accessories—and enjoy yellow-themed delicacies. Saffron is often added to rice dishes, giving them a festive yellow appearance, part of elaborate feasts.

People commonly place an idol or image of the Goddess in their worship area after bathing it in Ganga water and dressing the idol in yellow clothes.

Temples and educational institutions celebrate the Goddess by adorning her idols in yellow and conducting special prayers. Many schools and colleges also hold morning pujas, seeking her blessings for knowledge and wisdom.

Cultural activities, including poetry and music gatherings, take place in reverence to the Goddess of learning and the arts.
